This photo card was found in Ionia County, Michigan. The photo was taken in the Keller photo studio in Nappanee, Elkhart, Indiana. Card reverse has written in pen, “Anna and Jacob Deisch”, “Merle Deisch”, and “Baby Blanche Deisch”.
The Michigan Marriage index shows a Jacob Deisch, age 36, born in Ohio, occupation: Butcher, living in Indiana. Jacob married Anna R. Freeman, age 20, born in Pennsylvania, living in Nottawa Township, St. Joseph, Michigan, on 12 January 1889 in Centreville, St. Joseph. This was Jacob’s 2nd marriage.
The 1900 Federal census from Union, Elkhart, Indiana for Jacob and Anna Deisch gives the following information: Jacob Deisch, age 48, born April 1852 in Indiana (assumed incorrect), works as a stock buyer. Jacob’s father and mother were born in Germany. His wife Anna R. was born in July of 1863 (31) and was born in Pennsylvania. Anna is the mother of 3, 2 then living.
Also living with the couple are: son Riley H., age 17, born 1883 (from 1st marriage); daughter Mearl A. [sic], age 5, born in 1894; and daughter Blanche, age 2, born 1898.
The photo shows a family of 4. That the children do look about 5 (Merl) and 2 (Blanche) it is likely that photo was taken around 1900. Perhaps Riley was working, had moved, or the couple wanted to picture only the children shared between them.
